Offor Studios (2022), film still

Offor Studios

About this Short Film

Offor Studios, by Kumbukani Mwase (Malawi, 2022), is a thoughtful short that explores living with a congenital disability through the lens of an individual writer. Rich in poetic language and intimate reflection, the film considers motivation, creativity and the private work of making meaning. It does not pretend to answer everything; instead it invites viewers to listen to a distinct voice and to notice the everyday strengths and challenges that shape a life. Screened as part of Focus on Ability, Offor Studios adds a Malawian perspective to our programme, reminding audiences of the power of words and personal storytelling in shifting perceptions about disability.

Film Transcript

Everyone. We are here on the Focus on Ability project. We find Akim, who is physically challenged and finds it difficult to write and speak. Despite that, he has achieved to write poems and shoot films.

I've been at the most limited points, but the challenges have no access to the people who can help me — maybe books like... I went to school, I did my Sunday school, I wish that, you know, I'm going to play.
