Film Transcript

Across Australia, over 280 people are being diagnosed with diabetes — that is one person every five minutes. Based on the website Medical News Today, diabetes describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood sugar either because insulin production is inadequate, the body's tissues do not respond properly to insulin, or both.

People affected by this medical condition have different experiences dealing with it. (Picture is from Oakland.)

Hi, my name is Peter and I'm 46 years old. I live here in Perth together with my wife and three daughters. Diabetes runs in our family; my mother and some of my siblings have been diagnosed and passed away because of it. A couple of years ago I experienced getting tired easily and sometimes having difficulty breathing. I have been diagnosed with high cholesterol and high sugar levels, but luckily, with proper self-discipline, a good diet and a positive outlook on life, the doctors advised that I still have a fighting chance to prevent diabetes.

Every morning I make sure I remember to take my vitamins and medicines for the day. After work I take time to exercise, either at home, the park or the gym. My family has also been very supportive, especially my youngest. My wife always makes sure we all eat healthy foods such as fish and vegetable salads. My advice is: do some exercise, maintain a regular diet, and if you get the chance see your doctors for regular check-ups. I was determined to share my positive approach and not let it stand in the way of enjoying my life.
